En el marco del Plan Estratégico 2007-2011 de INIA, se inició un proyecto de investigación sobre identificación y evaluación de especies forestales multipropósito. Dos especies fueron identificados como promisorias: el pecan (Carya illinoinensis) y el algarrobo (ñandubay) (Prosopis affinis), exótica y nativa respectivamente. En el período 2008-2009, se procedió a una prospección del germoplasma disponible a nivel nacional en plantaciones de pecan y en formaciones naturales del área de repartición del algarrobo. La identificación de fuentes de semillas y la colecta de materiales genético permitieron el establecimiento en INIA Tacuarembó de un banco de germoplasma activo conformado por 177 accesiones de pecan y 200 accesiones de algarrobo. Dada la amplia
variabilidad observada en estos materiales genéticos (tamaño, color y peso), era esperable una variación de su comportamiento productivo en diferentes zonas ecológicas del país. En el marco del PEI 2012-2016, se planificó un programa para la evaluación, selección y producción de materiales de reproducción (seminales y clonales) mejorados localmente para fines multipropósito; lo cual implica mejorar la velocidad de crecimiento, la forma de fuste y de copa y la producción de frutos. Por tal motivo, se instalaron 10 pruebas de progenies en zonas norte, sur, este, litoral y centro en un proyecto de domesticación de especies forestal de
alto valor. En este trabajo, se presentan resultados de los dos ensayos instalados en litoral en el Campo Experimental 3 de INIA Salto Grande. Abstract
Montevideo, the capital city of Uruguay, founded by Spaniards in the 18th century, and Colonia del Sacramento, established by the Portuguese in the 17th century, are sources of olive diversity. A study and analysis of this unexplored heritage was initiated 10 years ago, using morphological and molecular tools. After a primary geographical and historical survey, 360 Olea europaea fruit and leaf samples were collected. After morphological analysis of 11 stone characters, the samples could not be matched with any cultivars in databases from Mediterranean countries. When a set of 14 pairs of microsatellite primers was applied, nine different multilocus genotypes were detected that were not recorded in the databases. In agreement with the colonization process and olive tree introduction routes into South America, two groups of genotypes were distinguished: a) seven ?genetic mosaic? genotypes related to genotypes from Spain and Portugal, introduced to Uruguay in areas under Spanish control, and b) two genotypes with one of two alleles in less than 70% with molecular variants found in Hispanic and Portuguese cultivars. Because of their height and trunk size, these trees were assumed to be older. Based on this information, we conclude that Uruguay has preserved a unique and original gene pool, currently productive and adapted to local soil and climatic conditions. This pool is a heritage of global interest, suitable for commercial and cultural purposes.
